Well once you've understood it, it's easy. y=f(x) I mean they give you a function, you look it in the eye and think what aren't you allowed to do? Divide by 0 and have a negative scare root. Right? Well later you'll see that ln >0, but we learnt if nothing is ''illegal'' the domain is R. So if you've got f(x)=4x+1 you've got Df=R, then you continue. Don't know how far you've got. Bye Bye
